Novel DNA Sequencing Technology Development
To improve the lives of individuals with cancer, we have embarked on a research initiative to use cutting edge genetics and technology to interrogate the fundamental genetic" digital" code responsible for cancer development and overall clinical behavior. Cancer is a direct result of the genetic changes in its genome. Along these lines, our research group is pursuing fundamental questions regarding the underlying genetics of cancer risk, cancer recurrence and the response of cancers to specific targeted therapies. To answer these questions, we are using powerful new DNA sequencing technologies and innovative approaches to identify clinically-relevant cancer mutations and other genetic errors.

Our research program is focused on:
  1. Development of novel approaches for analyzing cancer genomes
  2. Discovery and validation of genetic signatures portending prognosis and therapeutic prediction for individuals with cancer
  3. Determining inherited pathogenic mutations that increase the risk of developing gastrointestinal malignancies
  4. The genetic analysis of complete cancer genome sequences derived from inherited cancer

Genetic Oncology and Personalized Diagnostics
Creating a "personalized" cancer management strategy for each individual requires decoding the DNA sequence of a person's cancer. This involves identifying genetic errors, also known as mutations, for any given tumor. In essence, this requires checking our genome, the "operating system" of all living cells, for mutations which cause cancer and influence clinical prognosis. The composition and spectrum of these mutations can vary significantly from individual to individual, thus pointing out the importance of identifying all of the critical ones.
